Newquay Open 2013

12th May 2013
Truro Swimmers enjoy good results at the 2013 Newquay Open …

This is the third year of the Newquay Open Gala and it is clearly becoming a popular fixture in the swimming calendar attracting all the clubs from Cornwall and this year it saw the arrival of Plymouth Leander.   Many young swimmers were aiming to build on times achieved at the Counties and get early times for the following year, some were going for regional times and others debuting at their first competitive gala having made the qualification times.

The gala gives the exciting opportunity for some young swimmers to qualify in the preliminary 50m event heats for finals something that is often not possible at larger galas where older juniors tend to dominate.

Coach Emily took a large Truro team of 28 swimmers:
Luke Barnsley, William Becconsall, Rhys Blake, Robert Brittle, Roddy Brookes, Vivienne Carveth,  Quinn Clapton, Sophie Clifton-Griffith, Charlotte Corbett, Ben Coston, Josephine Cowley, Oscar Davies, Charlotte Drew,  Jodie Kotenko, Tom Leigh, Aaron Martyn, Ben Norton, Sam Norton, Joss Pascoe,  Mikey Pond, Jack Richards,  Jack Rogers, Matthew Rothwell, Mia Rule, Tanni Smitham, Hannah Stephens, Bethany Vingoe and Megan Vingoe.

10 Bronzes, 13 Silvers, 6 Golds and 6 Finals!   Our Golden Girl Duo were Jodie Kotenko winning the 12 year old 50 free and fly with Megan Vingoe winning 10 year old 200 Freestyle.   Our Golden Trio of Boys were Sam Norton for 10 year old 200 breaststroke, Oscar Davies for 13 year old 200 backstroke and Mikey Pond for 10 year old 50 free.   Sam’s breaststroke was a storming pb of 9 seconds in a time of 2.24 which came fast on the heels of his awesome Gold medal win at the IAPS (Independent Schools Swimming) finals the day before in Crawley for his 25m breaststroke. Our 9 year olds swam strongly with notable swims from Hannah Stephens winning Silver for the 50 breaststroke, Charlotte Drew winning Silver for 200 breaststroke and bronze in the 200 back, Sophie Clifton-Griffth silver in the 50 butterfly and Luke Barnsley winning bronze in 200 backstroke and breaststroke.   The 10 year old boys and girls are a force to be reckoned with and swam brilliantly with some stunning pbs including a 4.44 second pb for Joss Pascoe in the 50 breaststroke.   Bethany Vingoe won bronze in the 50 breaststroke and Silver in the 200 breaststroke, Tanni Smitham won three silvers in the 200 Freestyle, 200 backstroke and 50 backstroke, Megan added bronze in the 50 fly to her gold.   The 10 year old boys were on fire Sam adding silver for his 200 free to his golds with a silver for Mikey Pond in the 50 fly to add to his gold. For the 11 year olds Tom Leigh built on his successive at the Millfield Last Chance Gala the day before where he secured his regional backstroke time by winning bronzes in the 50 free, 50 fly and 200 back.   For the 12 year old girls Jodie Kotenko added bronze in the 50 breaststroke to her golds and swam in three 50m finals coming fourth in the 50 free, third in the breaststroke and third in the butterfly. Ben Norton for the 12 year old boys swam one of the monster pbs of the day with a 10 second improvement in his 200 freestyle and pbs in all his swims.   Our quartet of 13 year old boys, Jack Rogers, Oscar Davies, Matthew Rothwell and Quinn Clapton had their own share of pbs and medals.   Jack Rogers won silver in the 50 breaststroke and came third in the final, Quinn Clapton won silver in the 50 backstroke and came 5 th in the final with a huge pb of 11 seconds in the 200 backstroke, Matthew Rothwell won bronze in the 50 back and Oscar Davies won silver in the 200 breaststroke and qualified for the 50m breaststroke final and came 6 th.   WELL DONE TO YOU ALL at a gala with some very stiff competition.
