Ben Takes Gold and the Record at the British Open Swimming Championships

Ben Procter one of Britain’s top  S14 category  disability swimmer ‘s joined Truro City Swimming Club last Autumn. Taking on this new training regime has proved so far to be very fruitful for Ben as he returned from the British Open Championships with a British record and a gold medal.

At these Championships held at Ponds Forge Sheffield, Ben broke the S14 Category 200m freestyle British record in a personal best time of 2.04.09 a second under any previous time he had ever swam before and five seconds inside the qualifying time for IPC World Championships.

It has only been a very recent decision that the S14 Category would be selected for future world and Olympic competitions. The swims  available for Ben at the moment in the IPC events are the 200m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke and the 100m Backstroke.  Hopefully in the future the events will be expanded to include the Butterfly events  additonal freestyle events and the Individual medley events  all of which Ben excels in.

Not to be deterred by swimming in his weaker events Ben also swam in the 100m Breaststroke getting a one and a half second Personal Best and 6th place. In the 100m backstroke Ben again got inside the qualifying time for the IPC World Championships in a time of 1.07.57.

In two weeks Ben will return to Sheffield  and needs to  repeat this performance  in the World trials, he will then be able to represent Great Britain in the IPC World Championships which are being held in Eindhoven in August.
